For scalping, the key metric is not average spread but spread consistency during news events. A market-maker account with a 0.8-pip average can widen to 5 pips during a CPI release. A raw-spread ECN account (commission-based) stays near 0.1–0.3 pip during the same event. Scalping strategies built on tight-spread assumptions fail catastrophically on variable-spread accounts during the events that tend to produce the best opportunities.
